Leading the Way for How2Recycle Approval

The Situation
A North American, snack foods co-packer and manufacturer of several major national brands, was seeking the next step in sustainable packaging. The company specializes in natural foods with a focus on healthy, environmentally friendly products. Their commitment to “zero waste” during production required millions of dollars invested in automation efficiencies; and they needed packaging solutions with more sustainable substrates to match. With over 42 million packages coming off the VFFS line every year, they looked to transition from all VFFS metalized structures to recycle-ready. The structure also needed to qualify for the How2Recycle program.
The Solutions
Kendall Packaging utilizes the latest in polymer and processing technologies to deliver sustainable solutions. Kendall’s R&D team designed a high barrier EVOH structure to meet the necessary requirements. Initial speed trials indicated that the film ran smoothly and a significant pullback in production speeds was not detected. Shelf-life and accelerated shelf-life trials were also tested. The company felt confident submitting the structure to How2Recycle for approval.
The Results
Kendall’s sustainable structure passed the program’s qualification tests without issue; and the customer was granted approval to use theHow2Recycle label. Additionally, the company is going through a full product line of artwork redesign that is catered around Kendall Packaging’s recycle-ready film.
