July 23, 2019

In the January/February issue, Package Printing highlighted 5 major packaging trends to keep an eye out for in 2019. July’s blog post revisits these trends for a mid-year look at how Kendall Packaging is staying ahead of the curve.

An Emphasis on Sustainability

The focus on sustainability isn’t new, however, consumers are giving the topic more attention now than ever before. At Kendall, we are committed to advancing our search for sustainable solutions for film. While recycling plays a vital role in everyone’s approach to sustainability, Kendall is also trying to further the conversation. We have been taking a hard look at our internal processes to provide sustainable solutions for film while still producing the same high-quality product. Kendall’s sustainability efforts to reduce, reuse, and recycle are vast. These efforts include down-gauging and re-engineering structures without compromising performance and shelf life, offering affordable customized solutions for multi-layer films with PCR content, and separating and recycling components from every step of our manufacturing process, including cores, pallets, and film scraps.

Illustration in Packaging

According to Package Printing Magazine, many companies are favoring illustrations on their packaging as opposed to images of the finished product. Realistic images of ingredients and products provide a more wholesome, natural look that appeals to a variety of consumers. For example, popular brands like Yes now feature illustrations of product ingredients on wet wipes packages for a simple, transparent message, as shown above. At Kendall, we use technologically advanced flexographic W&H presses which allow us to produce crisp, captivating imagery on a myriad of substrates. This technology gives our customers the confidence that we can provide quality designs, on any material they desire, in-spec and on-time. Kendall is GMI certified meaning that we adhere to quality programs that allow us to meet the most demanding requirements for packaging suppliers today.

Enhanced Smart Packaging

Smart packaging offers a personal customer experience and enhanced communication from the seller to the consumer. With added technology, flexible packaging can provide more than just a QR code that redirects consumers to the company website. Specifically, smart packaging offers improved safety, extended shelf life, and more information regarding product quality and orientation. Kendall collaborates with technology partners to offer customers the most advanced applications available. We recently applied advanced smart packaging technology to an existing product for a long-time customer. The RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags attached to our film for this product act as anti-theft devices which set off store alarms if the item hasn’t been paid for.

Modernized Packaging Design

As the consumer mindset continues to modernize, sometimes a crisp image printed on flexible packaging is not enough to pique their interest. Consumers are taking notice of brands that are more universal and inclusive. Take personal care items marketed towards women, for example; Companies moved from overly pink and frilly designs and have opted for more elegant designs as well as slogans. Images and designs act as a visual language that must speak to the consumer and relate back to the product’s intent. Re-designing women’s products now requires a focus on individual components that make up the product rather than a blanket image of femininity. At Kendall Packaging, we assure customers that however their packaging design evolves, we can deliver the quality and efficiency they require.

The Emerging Cannabis Industry

The cannabis industry has grown exponentially in the past few years, and many brands are looking to flexible packaging manufacturers for safe and reliable packaging solutions. Flexible packaging provides high-quality, attractive, and cost-effective options for the cannabis industry. More specifically, stand-up pouches have been especially popular in the industry and offer space-saving sizes, protective packaging, and food safety compliant films. Currently, Kendall is exploring the emerging cannabis market and the regulations needed to meet in order to provide safe, reliable options to those interested in using flexible packaging for their cannabis products.
