Insight Into Cold Seal Applications

Covering Cold Seal Adhesives (Applications, Technology, Complications)

January 24, 2019

Kendall recently installed a Nordmeccanica Combi 4000 Laminator and now provides commercially available cold seal solutions for a wide range of applications.

In this three part blog series, we will discuss cold seal adhesives and popular flexible packaging applications currently using these adhesives. We will also cover cold seal technology and general machine capabilities. Lastly, we will explore common cold seal adhesive complications that could potentially impact efficiencies, product performance, and/or functionality.

What is a cold seal adhesive?

Cold seal adhesives, commonly referred to as self seal adhesives, are adhesive solutions primarily used to seal heat sensitive items. The adhesive is printed in a pattern that allows a wrapper to be sealed without applying heat from sealing jaws. As the name indicates, the adhesive solutions easily form together to create a strong bond under pressure that will only seal to itself and no other surface, differentiating it from pressure-sensitive adhesives.

Cold seal adhesives are a popular choice for many flexible packaging applications, offering advantages such as increased line speeds and decreased waste. Common cold seal applications in today’s market include heat sensitive products such as chocolate and ice cream; nutritional bar products such as granola and protein; medical product packaging, and more.

Additional advantages of using cold seal applications include…

  • Optimal efficiency and higher processing speeds
  • Stronger seals and moisture resistance
  • Reliable freshness and longer shelf life
  • Easier unwind releases and minimal cling
  • Cutting down on waste

Do you have products (new or existing) that could potentially benefit from the use of cold seal adhesive solutions? Our technical engineers can explore cold-seal alternatives at the beginning of the design phase to help avoid unnecessary changes later in the process or re-evaluate your current product applications to develop more sustainable solutions.
