Trick-or-Treat, Halloween Candy & Sweets!
October 31, 2019
Looking for something sweet this Halloween? Take a bite out of the history of Halloween candy and other offerings. Now wrapped in… Glow in the dark packaging!
Trick-or-treating is rooted in the belief that souls of the dead roamed the earth and were appeased with food and drink offerings. Eventually, people started to impersonate the spirits on Halloween by dressing up in creepy costumes to receive the treats on their behalf.
Luckily for us “20th centuriers” treats offered today are endless! During the month of October, candy companies temporarily replace well-known confections with spooky stand-ins. Pumpkin flavored concoctions, zombie shaped candies, and glow in the dark wrapped chocolates fill the shelves. Brands find success by cleverly re-naming and replacing packaging themes during the limited time-window. Loyal consumers should not worry though, as their favorite candies are still offered in classic form.
The options we have today for Halloween was not always the case. When trick-or-treating began, children were given homemade goodies, small toys, and coins. In the 1950’s, candy manufacturers developed Halloween candy that was convenient and affordable for handing out to trick-or-treaters. It wasn’t until the 1970’s though that factory-made sweets were recognized as the only acceptable form of offering. Packaged and sealed candies helped address safety concerns regarding children receiving tampered with homemade products.
New sweets enter the market daily but you still might remember nostalgic Halloween handouts like Candy Necklaces, Bit-O-Honey, Necco Wafers, Bottle Caps, and Boston Baked Beans. And although popular brands like Hersey, Reese, M&M’s, and Kit Kat were created in the early 1900’s (Candy Corn in the 1800s!); these companies still work hard today to deliver new concepts to consumers every holiday season.
